Adelaide Himeji Garden

Cnr South Terrace &, Glen Osmond Rd., Adelaide, Australia, SA 5000

A tribute to Adelaide’s sister city, Himeji in Japan, the Adelaide Himeji Garden incorporates two classic styles of Japanese garden design. The minimalist rock-and-sand garden is raked daily for maximum serenity. The tranquil lake garden features lush greenery, stepping stones, statues, a traditional bamboo water tube, and more. It's perfect for lunch, reading, or meditation.

The basics

Created in the 1980s and later refined by Japanese landscape designer Yoshitaka Kumada and local volunteers, the Adelaide Himeji Garden is a small part of the parklands surrounding this planned city’s historic center. The gardens are fenced, but there’s no charge to enter, so that you can enjoy them at your own pace. Many travelers visit independently while exploring the parklands, but you can also discover this lush urban oasis on a pedicab or bicycle tour.

Things to know before you go

  • The Adelaide Himeji Garden is great for garden lovers, photographers, social media mavens, and meditators.

  • Unless you plan on meditating or picnicking, the garden is a quick visit: Many travelers will be done in 10–15 minutes.

  • Parents should be aware that the lake is not fenced.

  • The Adelaide Himeji Garden is wheelchair friendly.

How to get there

The Adelaide Himeji Garden sits on the south side of Adelaide Park Lands, off South Terrace. The free buses 98A, 98C, 99A, and 99C run to Halifax Street, about a 5-minute walk.

When to get there

The Adelaide Himeji Garden opens in the morning throughout the year and closes in the early evening for the Australian cold season (early April to early October). At warmer times of year, it closes later in the evening. The garden is loveliest in spring and summer but has a stark beauty even in winter.

Discovering the gardens in Adelaide Park Lands

Laid out by Colonel William Light in 1836, Adelaide’s airy parklands are a highlight of any visit to the city. The Adelaide Botanic Garden, a vast 19th-century garden, is home to waterlilies, a palm house, and an award-winning rose garden. Rose fans will want to add Veale Gardens and Rymill Park Rose Garden in season. Families can enjoy a wealth of free play areas, as well as the TreeClimb Adelaide aerial adventure course.
