Ah Amália - Living Experience

Praça David Leandro da Silva 16, Lisbon, Portugal, 1950-242

The Ah Amália - Living Experience tells the story of fado singer Amália Rodrigues, who is the best-selling Portuguese artist of all time. Immersive exhibits take you through her personal and professional journey, from watching holograms of her performances to seeing her life story told through virtual reality.

The basics

The Ah Amália - Living Experience is not a central attraction, so visitors to Lisbon need to make a concerted choice to visit, which can be made easier through private tours that handle Lisbon transportation for you. Tickets to the exhibition are scheduled in time slots, and most people generally take around 1–2 hours exploring its exhibits. After Ah Amália, you can visit nearby art galleries or continue to follow the river north to the Lisbon Oceanarium (Oceanário de Lisboa) or Vasco da Gama Tower (Torre Vasco da Gama).

Things to know before you go

  • Free street parking is available in the area around the exhibition.

  • Book tickets online ahead of your visit for a discounted rate.

  • The exhibition is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, but the audiovisual exhibits may cause issues for anyone with sensory sensitivities.

  • Photos and videos are allowed in the exhibition as long as flash isn’t used and it’s not disruptive.

  • Parents may find it hard to keep young kids entertained here, despite its high-tech approach.

How to get there

Ah Amália is located in an arts precinct in the Marvila quarter of northeast Lisbon. The easiest way to reach the exhibition from the center of Lisbon is to take buses 781, 782, or 728 from Commerce Square. Although the Braço de Prata train station is nearby, it lacks convenient connections to the inner city.

When to get there

The exhibition is open daily, usually opening around 11am and closing in the evening. Due to its location, the experience isn’t as popular as many central Lisbon attractions, so it shouldn’t matter when you visit. Cold and rainy days are ideal for this indoor activity.

Experiencing fado in Lisbon

The music of fado is a cornerstone of Lisbon's culture, and so it’s often something visitors to the city want to explore. The fado bars of Chiado offer the easiest way to experience the music with evening performances, but those curious about its past can also learn more at the Fado Museum in Alfama, which takes a more traditional approach to exploring the art form compared to Ah Amália.
