Ajman Museum
Al Bustan, Ajman, United Arab Emirates
Set inside the 18th-century Ajman Fort—a former residence of Ajman’s rulers—Ajman Museum casts a spotlight on the history of the emirate. Distinct for its cannon-flanked gateway, sand-colored ramparts, and antique wooden doors, the museum chronicles Ajman’s ancient and recent past with everything from an early excavated cemetery to tribal weaponry, replica dhow boats, and dioramas of traditional Emirati domestic life.
The basics
Visitors can see Ajman Museum independently, exploring the interior displays and central courtyard, and taking in the fort’s restored battlements, wind towers, doors, and stairways. The museum is also a regular stop on private tours of Ajman and neighboring Sharjah, which typically depart from Dubai and incorporate the highlights of both emirates, including sights like Sharjah Fort.
Many private UAE-wide tours from Dubai also stop at the museum, as part of day-long itineraries that cover a selection of the emirates, such as Sharjah, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
Things to know before you go
Ajman Museum will interest history enthusiasts, families, and anyone curious about Emirati traditions.
There’s an admission fee to the museum.
Plan to spend about an hour here; exhibits are annotated in Arabic and English.
Much of the museum is inaccessible for wheelchair users and visitors with strollers.
On-site facilities include air-conditioning in many areas, restrooms, and a souvenir shop.
How to get there
Ajman Museum sits in the Ajman Heritage District alongside Sheikh Abdullah Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Street in central Ajman, near the Ajman/Musalla Bus Terminal. If you’re driving from Dubai, take the E11 northward, the S112 and S103 through Sharjah, and then Ajman’s Sheikh Bin Hamood Street to the Heritage District and nearby paid parking. You can also take a cab or the E400 or E411 bus to Musalla from Dubai’s Union or Etisalat station, respectively.
When to get there
Ajman Museum is open daily year-round, from early morning to mid-evening from Saturday to Thursday, and for afternoons only on Fridays. It’s best to check the schedule in advance, as hours can vary. While the museum is usually quiet, arriving in the early morning or early afternoon—and avoiding Friday afternoons and weekend evenings—will help you avoid any crowds.
Highlights at Ajman Museum
If you’re fascinated by ancient history, don’t miss the museum’s centerpiece: archaeological relics dating from around 2500–2000 BC, which were unearthed at the Al Muwaihat ancient burial site in Ajman emirate. Treasures include large clay jars and funerary necklaces adorned with gems like agate from China—the latter proof of the far-reaching trading links that existed here millennia ago.
