Alatsee
Füssen, Germany, 87629
Little, low-key, and lovely, the Alatsee is a gem of a Bavarian lake that offers a tranquil respite for locals and castle-weary sightseers from nearby Füssen. You can walk around it on a leisurely half-hour stroll, stop for a summer cool-down dip near the shore, and take a twirl on one of the rope swings.
The basics
You can easily walk around this small lake, following the shores on a loop that’s less than 1 mile (1.5 kilometers). As with many bodies of water in the area, the views are of mountains, forests, and lake. Many visitors like to stop and swim in the summer, and you can find several little nooks where you can wade in easily.
Things to know before you go
Wear bug spray in summer, as mosquitos are often present.
There is limited shade or cover around the lake track, so bring waterproof clothing or a sun hat, depending on the forecast.
The route around the lake is mostly flat and suitable for families, elderly people, and cyclists.
How to get there
On the north shore of the lake, there is a small car park and some street parking a little further down the road toward Füssen. In summer and on weekends, parking can be tricky. Many visitors like to hike or cycle to the lake from Füssen on a route that takes around 1.5 hours by foot or 30 minutes by bike. Follow signs to Bad Faulenbach and then Alatsee.
When to get there
You can visit the lake to walk around its shores throughout the year. If you want to swim, remember it’s an alpine lake. Waiting for a hot summer day is best if you want to appreciate the chilly waters. The Hotel Restaurant Alatsee on the lake is a popular stop for lunch or a coffee.
Home to Hitler’s gold?
Rumor has it that this lake (and others in the area) was used to hide gold in World War II; however, the treasure hunters and divers who came found sunken weapons and did not loot. Don’t dive down and look for yourself, though; diving has been banned in the lake since the 1980s due to a rare freshwater sulfur bacterium that's present from around a depth of 49 feet (15 meters).
