Alcanada Beach
Camí d'Alcanada, Alcudia, Spain, 07400
Far from the crowds of Alcudia, Alcanada Beach (sometimes spelled Aucanada Beach) is a rugged stretch of coastline lapped by clear, turquoise water. It’s the natural highlight of the tiny town of Alcanada and features pebbles and stones rather than sand. Shallow water means it's great for swimming, while a lack of commercial development makes it a perfect spot to leave behind the bustle of daily life.
The basics
Alcanada Beach is home to some protected marine flora that you can only find in a few other places in the world, such as Neptune grass, which creates billowing underwater meadows ideal for snorkeling over. Some northern Mallorca sightseeing cruises pass by the beach, along with Cap d’es Pinar, a pine-tree-shrouded section of the coast, and the sandy Formentor Beach.
Things to know before you go
The sea bed leading out from the beach can be rocky, so it’s a good idea to wear water shoes if you plan on wading further out.
There are no lifeguards at Alcanada Beach. No sunbeds or parasols are available either, but the pine trees backing the beach provide ample shade.
Grab snacks and drinks from the nearby town of Alcanada, as you won’t find any bars or restaurants on this remote beach, which adds to the appeal for many.
How to get there
Alcanada Beach is a 15-minute drive from the inland tourist hub of Alcudia via Cami d-Alcanada. If you don’t have your own wheels, don’t worry; it’s easy to get to the beach and other coastal spots by bus. Hop on the 323 bus from the historic center of Alcudia and get off at Ses Pedreres, a 5-minute walk away.
When to get there
For the best weather in Mallorca, visit from spring through fall; the summer months of June, July, and August are generally packed, so avoid these if possible. The beach is busiest on the weekends when locals set up camp for the day, but it’s nearly always less crowded than the most commercial beaches near Alcudia.
Hiking trails from Alcanada
If you’re in the mood for something more active than sunbathing, several hiking trails start from Alcanada town. You can take the challenging route to Sa Cova Tancada, a stalagmite- and stalactite-filled cave, or descend the steep route down to Coll Baix Beach, where you’ll be rewarded with pristine waters and very few crowds.
