Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Lossi Plats 10, Tallinn, Estonia, 10130

This large and ornately-decorated Russian Orthodox cathedral is a well-known and picturesque building in Tallinn’s Old Town (Vanalinn). Perched atop Toompea hill, across from Estonian parliament buildings, the onion-domed church is popular amongst visitors and those practicing the Orthodox faith. The church is dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky—the Prince of Novgorod and Russian hero who drove away German invaders in the 13th century.

The Basics

Tallinn’s largest cathedral was built by Mikhail Preobrazhensky from 18894 to 1900, when Estonia was under czarist Russian rule. The cathedral’s distinct architectural style is a sharp contrast to the rest of Old Town’s medieval vibe. It is worth a visit to see it’s impressive facade and to catch a glimpse of the decorative mosaics and icons inside. The church also has a carillon of 11 bells—the largest in all Tallinn—which can be heard ringing throughout Old Town before every service.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The cathedral is free to the public.
  • Most walking tours of Tallinn include a stop at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
  • Be quiet and respectful upon entering the cathedral as it is a practicing place of worship.

How to Get There

Since Vanalinn is a pedestrian-friendly area of the city, it is easiest (and fastest) to walk to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. From Old Town Square, follow Dunkri before a slight left on Rataskaevu. Make a right onto Lühike jalg and then turn right towards Lossi plats before turning left onto Lossi plats. Turn right onto Toom-Kooli and the cathedral will be on your right. The 7-minute walk is mostly flat.

When to Get There

The cathedral is open daily from 8am to 6pm, and until 7pm on Saturday. Guests are invited to come for daily liturgy.

Tallinn Old Town

Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tallinn Old Town is the jewel of the city housing its art, culture, food, and history amongst its 13th-century cobblestone streets and Gothic-spired buildings.
