Alice Springs Desert Park
871 Larapinta Drive, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, 0871
The Alice Springs Desert Park showcases the three main desert environments in Australia. Wander through sand, woodland, and river deserts and learn about their different plant and animal inhabitants. Take the short walking route through the park or explore further afield to find kangaroos and birdlife.
The Basics
In addition to wandering the 3,200-acre (1,300-hectare) grounds themselves, visit the nocturnal house, which mimics the night desert, to view rare and endangered animals such as bilbies and carnivorous ghost bats. Stop by the aquarium for a look at animals you might find in a waterhole including fish, yabbies, burrowing frogs, and turtles. Take advantage of interpretative displays, daily talks, and staff demos to learn about the diverse desert ecosystems.
Things to Know Before You Go
Alice Springs Desert Park is suitable for families with children and ideal for nature enthusiasts.
Self-guided audio tours are available with admission; animal encounters are an additional fee.
Wheelchairs, electric scooters, and strollers are available; accessible parking is on-site.
Facilities include a cafe, gift shop, and a picnic area.
How to Get There
The park is located on Larapinta Drive, 10 minutes by car from Alice Springs. There is free parking for buses and other vehicles. To arrive by public transport, take public bus route 400 to Albrecht Drive—it's then about a 20- to 25-minute walk to Desert Park. Alternatively, follow the Larapinta Trail by bicycle directly to the park entrance.
When to Get There
The Alice Springs Desert Park is open daily, from early morning to evening, except Christmas Day. Last entry is an hour and a half before close. The Nocturnal House has somewhat shorter hours. Informational programs are scheduled throughout the day.
Desert Dreamtime
In addition to learning about the flora and fauna that thrive in the arid deserts of central Australia, visitors may get an introduction to the region’s traditional owners, Aboriginal people belonging to the Arrernte language group. Discover how they have shared custody over the land for thousands of years through bush tucker foods, Dreamtime stories, and cultural traditions.
