Alloa Tower
Alloa Park, Alloa, United Kingdom, FK10 1PP
Alloa Tower, in the Clackmannanshire town of Alloa, is one of Scotland’s oldest and biggest medieval tower houses. An ancestral home of the Erskine family and Earls of Mar—the building dates back around 700 years. Visitors come to see opulent interiors, historical artifacts, artwork, and well-preserved architecture.
The basics
After being purchased by the National Trust in 1921, Alloa Tower opened as a museum. Visitors often come to the tower independently to explore the magnificent interiors. Highlights include the painting ceiling of the Great Hall, the weapon and armor collection, and the Victorian Kitchen—which shows what life was like in a 19th-century kitchen. There are also dungeons, an impressive portrait collection, and a roof walk that showcases magnificent views.
Things to know before you go
As the tower is 700 years old, accessing the upper floors can be difficult for those with limited mobility.
The ground floor is wheelchair-accessible, but there are stairs to the Great Hall (first floor) and a steep spiral staircase to the other floors and the roof walk.
The shop, toilets, and refreshment area are all wheelchair-accessible.
This is a family-friendly attraction with the opportunity for little ones to dress up in costumes from the 16th and 17th centuries.
There is an on-site shop on the ground floor to purchase souvenirs.
How to get there
Located in the center of Alloa, it’s possible to get to the town by train or bus. First Bus and Mackie’s Coaches offer a service from Stirling to Alloa. Also, Alloa train station has direct links from both Stirling and Glasgow. If driving, you can get to Alloa by traveling on the A907.
When to get there
The opening hours vary throughout the year (with typical hours being from around noon until late afternoon). However, it’s best to look up the opening schedule before visiting. Summer weekends are busiest, so visit during the week to avoid the crowds. Also, checking out the events calendar is recommended as the tower has activities throughout the year, including an Easter egg hunt and a Christmas Victorian fayre.
Who were the Erskine family?
The Erskine family—trusted aides of the ruling Stuart monarchs—lived in Alloa Tower from the 15th century until around 1800. This distinguished family were guardians of the royal children—including the young Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son James VI. The family was granted the Earldom of Mar in 1565, and the 6th Earl of Mar—John Erskine played a prominent role in the 1715 Jacobite Rising.
