POINT OF INTEREST

Alvor

Alvor, The Algarve

Set along the estuary of Alvor River, this relaxed harbor town oozes character and charm, with a historic core radiating out from a 16th-century hilltop church. Watch as fishing boats offload their catch—destined for riverfront restaurants—at the harbor, and join fellow vacationers sunning themselves at Praia do Alvor beach.

The Basics

Alvor has lots to offer. Sample sun-soaked beaches, including Praia do Alvor and the rock-scattered Praia dos Três Irmãos, and take in historic sights, such as the Church of Misericordia of Alvor and nearby Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar. You can also use the town as a gateway to Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve where you can take nature walks and go bird-watching.

The harbor is the starting point for boat tours along the coast—typical boat tour itineraries include a visit to Ponta da Piedade rock formations and Benagil Cave, as well as to lesser-known beaches and coves. Some tours combine a visit to Alvor with other towns and cities in the vicinity such as Ferragudo and Portimão.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Alvor is less rowdy than many of Algarve’s busier coastal resorts, making it well-suited to families and travelers looking for a laid-back base.

  • Sun loungers and parasols can be rented on Praia do Alvor.

  • Much of the historic center of Alvor is pedestrianized, so if you drive, it’s best to park on the outskirts and explore the interior on foot.

How to Get There

Alvor is about 47 miles (75 kilometers) from Faro Airport for a 1-hour drive. To get there, ride a bus or train from Faro to Portimão. From there, take a taxi or a Vai e Vem bus on to Alvor.

When to Get There

The months of July and August are peak tourist season in Alvor. At that time, it's best to make restaurant reservations and arrive early for a prime beach spot. The town is quieter in late spring and early autumn.

Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve

This protected nature reserve encompasses dune systems, salt pans, marshland, and freshwater lagoons, and is one of the Algarve’s best bird-watching sites. Bring along binoculars and look out for species such as stone curlews, flamingos, Audouin’s gulls, ospreys, and bluethroats. To get there from Alvor, follow the boardwalk trails near the beach and harbor. The best bird-spotting times are in early morning or an hour or two before sunset.
