Amazonas Park

Neapoli, Crete, 724 00

Located in northern Crete, Amazonas Park is a small, privately-funded animal park and rescue center focused on the conservation of endangered wildlife. In addition to domestic and local animals such as donkeys and goats, Amazonas Parks also features animals from South America, including parrots and monkeys.

The basics

During a visit to Amazonas Park, visitors can see colorful and exotic birds such as parrots, cockatoos, toucans, peacocks, and macaws. There are also butterflies, lizards, tortoises, goats, donkeys, lemurs, and monkeys. For many visitors, the highlight of their visit is the chance to feed the lemurs and monkeys inside their enclosures while under supervision. Amazonas Park also runs a breeding program for birds, many of which get returned into the wild in Brazil and elsewhere.

Things to know before you go

  • Amazonas Park is ideal for families with children and animal lovers.
  • There is an extra fee for food to feed the monkeys and lemurs.
  • The monkeys can sometimes get aggressive and try to take bags of food from you.
  • There is a small café onsite that sells ice cream and drinks.
  • Bring a hat, sun protection, and water as there is limited shade at the park.

How to get there

Amazonas Park is located about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) northeast of Neapoli. There’s no public transport so it’s best to take a taxi or rent a car. Take the Neapoli Exit on Highway E75, then follow the signs to Amazonas Park.

When to get there

Amazonas Park is open from morning until early evening daily during the season, which usually runs from late March to early November. During November and December, the park sometimes opens on the weekends when the weather is pleasant. The park isn’t very large and most visitors spend around an hour here.

Aquariums on Crete

There are no zoos on Crete but there are two aquariums: the Cretaquarium and the Aquaworld Aquarium and Reptile Rescue Center. Cretaquarium is located near Gournes. Open year-round, it focuses on sea life from around the Mediterranean. Aquaworld Aquarium and Reptile Rescue Center is located near Hersonissos and is open from April to November. Most of their sea life and reptiles have been rescued and hands-on interactions are encouraged.
