Amrit Udyan
Rashtrapati Bhawan, President's Estate, New Delhi, Delhi, 110004
Delhi isn’t short on green spaces, but a top spot for experiencing a colorful riot of spring color is Amrit Udyan, formerly Mughal Garden, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Although built in the 1920s, long after Mughal rule ended, the gardens were based on Mughal gardens found throughout North India, depictions in exquisite Persian miniature paintings, and English flower gardens.
The basics
Amrit Udyan is connected to the Indian President’s Palace and is only open to visitors in spring (February–March). Along with its hybrid Indian–English design elements, the gardens contain international blooms, including roses, tulips, cherry blossoms, orchids, and water lilies. It’s a delightful place for a spring stroll.
Travelers can visit the gardens independently or on a guided tour of Delhi. Guided tours often include a visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan. If you visit in spring and want to see the gardens on a tour, book a customizable private tour.
Things to know before you go
- Bring sun protection as much of the 15-acre (6-hectare) gardens are exposed, and Delhi gets hot in spring.
- The tactile garden was specifically designed for visitors with visual disabilities.
- Purified water and food from vendors are available, but you can’t bring in outside food.
How to get there
Unless you’re on a guided tour, the Delhi Metro is the easiest, cheapest, quickest, and most comfortable way of getting around. The nearest stations are Central Secretariat and Shivaji Stadium, about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from the gardens. Hail an autorickshaw from these stations to take you the rest of the way, or catch a free shuttle bus from gate 4 of Shivaji Stadium station.
When to get there
The gardens are only open to the public in February and March. Currently, the gardens host the Udyanotsav, or Delhi Greens Festival, with live music and street food. In season, the gardens open mid-morning and close in the early evening, with the last admission an hour before closing. They’re closed on Mondays and for the Holi festival.
Other top gardens in Delhi
Park and garden lovers have plenty of options in Delhi. Both Humayun’s Tomb and Safdarjung’s Tomb have beautiful formal gardens with straight paths and water features—as well as the tombs. The Lodi Gardens are beautiful (and free to enter). They were built during the Lodi dynasty, which predated the Mughals, but also contain some Mughal-era monuments.
