POINT OF INTEREST

Anaeho'omalu Bay

Puako, Big Island of Hawaii, HI, 96738

This popular stretch of Kohala Coast beach, commonly called A-Bay, offers beachgoers a little bit of everything needed for a fun day, with good facilities and plenty of water sports. Palms trees add to the picturesque setting, framing sunset views in the evening and providing shade in the heat of the day.

The basics

Known for its fairly calm surf, Anaeho'omalu Bay offers rentals of an assortment of water toys ranging from kayaks to boogie boards. It’s also a popular spot to snorkel, so if you packed your gear, bring it along. The beach has a bit of a wild side when it comes to animal life. Turtles seem to like it here just as much as people, so take plenty of pictures to show everyone back home, but be sure to keep a safe distance.

Things to know before you go

  • Remember to bring sunscreen and apply it frequently; the rays here are powerful.
  • There’s plenty of free parking, restrooms, and picnic facilities.
  • The sand can be a bit on the rocky side, so shoes that can get wet may come in handy.
  • Keep a safe distance from and don’t touch any wildlife you may encounter.

How to get there

The most pleasant time to visit the Kona side of the Big Island is during the winter months, when temperatures are a little cooler. You're also likely to spot humpback whales when you visit during this time. However, the beach can get busy during this popular season so just remember: the earlier you go, the smaller the crowds.

When to get there

The beach is located next to the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, on the western coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, about a half-hour drive north of the Kona International Airport and 15-minutes inland to Waikoloa Village. It's easiest to get to by taxi or rental car, as bus service is limited in the area.

Waikoloa Highlands Center

If you’re visiting Anaeho'omalu Bay and its beach, it’s worth stopping by nearby Waikoloa Highlands Center in Waikoloa Village to pick up supplies or grab a meal. Along with businesses that serve the local community, including doctors, a yoga center, and hair salon, there's also a consignment shop and a host of dining options and coffee shops, most of which are locally owned.
