Annapolis Historic District

Annapolis, MD, 21401

Home to more than 1,500 well-preserved and restored buildings, Annapolis Historic District offers a glimpse into the Maryland capital’s rich heritage. Visitors can immerse themselves in the district’s past by wandering along cobblestone streets and admiring 18th-century architecture.

The basics

Annapolis Historic District is home to some of the city’s most-important landmarks, including the United States Naval Academy, the Maryland State House, the William Paca House and Garden, the Hammond-Harwood House, and the Chase-Lloyd House. After checking off the city’s must-see attractions, strolling through the streets of the Historic District and popping into its array of cafés, bars, and restaurants is an appealing way to spend a day. Many sightseeing tours of Annapolis—whether by foot, bike, or vehicle—visit the Historic District.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable footwear: the cobblestone streets can be tricky to navigate.

  • Visitors with mobility issues may find the narrow, uneven streets challenging.

  • Immerse yourself in the district’s atmosphere by staying in one of its historic inns.

How to get there

The Historic District’s narrow streets are best navigated on foot. If you do drive, be aware that parking is severely limited in the area and visitors are encouraged to park in a paid park-and-ride lot off Rowe Boulevard, west of the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and take a free shuttle bus to the district.

When to get there

Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds than the peak summer season. The Naval Academy’s Commissioning Week at the end of May is a particularly festive time to visit, as is the holiday season when the district is bedecked in decorations.

Historic Inns and Taverns

Annapolis Historic District is home to some of the United States’ oldest inns and taverns, including the Middleton Tavern, established in 1750, which has hosted George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. Soak up the tavern’s historic atmosphere while enjoying a meal or a drink.
