Aosta Valley Astronomical Observatory
Località Lignan 39, Aosta, Italy, 11020
Take advantage of the dark skies deep in the mountains above Aosta to observe the stars, planets, and more at this astronomical observatory. Set in the Saint-Barthélemy Valley—an ideal location due to low light pollution and clear skies—the educational site has a planetarium and observation areas with telescopes, laser pointers, and even special equipment to take a safe gander at the sun.
The basics
Astronomy buffs of all ages will enjoy taking a close look at the heavens at the Aosta Valley Astronomical Observatory, which received Italy’s first Starlight Stellar Park Certification in 2020. Stop by after a day of exploring the area’s trails and villages for the planetarium shows in the late afternoon and early evening, or contact the observatory directly for upcoming evening events, from stargazing to guided tours. You can also include a visit to the planetarium and observatory as part of a driving tour through the Aosta peaks.
Things to know before you go
The planetarium show, tours, and special events at the observatory are all in Italian only.
The nighttime guided tour includes the observation of the sky with the naked eye—with commentary by your guide using a laser pointer—as well as through telescopes.
Temperatures plummet in the evening at this high altitude, so wear warm clothing and bring extra layers.
There’s a 5-minute walk to the observatory along an unlit gravel driveway, so bring a flashlight or headlamp.
The site is fully accessible to visitors in wheelchairs.
How to get there
The Aosta Valley Astronomical Observatory is located just outside the village of Lignan in the Saint-Barthélemy Valley. Lignan is about a 45-minute drive into the mountains from Aosta, and from the parking area there is a 5-minute walk along an unlit access road to the observatory above.
When to get there
The dark skies above the Saint-Barthélemy Valley are ideal for stargazing, but visit when the weather is clear to ensure the best views. The observatory’s planetarium shows and night tours are scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday in July and August, and Saturdays only from October to June.
Italy’s stellar parks
The Aosta Valley Astronomical Observatory was the first to receive the Starlight Stellar Park Certification in 2020, but has since been joined by the GAL Hassin Astronomical Observatory high in the Sicilian mountains near the tiny town of Isnello. This certification recognizes observatories not only for their excellent sky quality and conservation initiatives, but also for their promotion of “astrotourism” by opening up the facilities to the public, through guided visits and other educational events.
