Ars-Electronica-Strasse 1, Linz, Austria, 4040
Linz's Ars Electronica Center offers innovative ways to engage with science, technology, and new media, showcasing the interplay of art, technology, and society now and in the future. Since it was founded in 1979, the center has grown to be one of the premier attractions in the city, drawing guests of all ages interested in learning more about the digital revolution.
The basics
Ars Electronica explores everything from biotechnology to artificial intelligence, with interactive exhibits that rely heavily on sound, light, and projection mapping to delve into questions about the world around us. Highlights include labs for kids and adults, an open sound studio with music production tools, and an array of exhibits focusing on the intersection of neurology and technology. Tours are available, and the center features on several walking and cycling tours of Linz.
Things to know before you go
The Ars Electronica Center is a must-visit for anyone interested in science and technology.
Discounted admission is available for students under 26 and visitors 65 and over.
The center is wheelchair-accessible.
Lockers are available, but you'll need a 1- or 2-euro coin to use as a deposit.
How to get there
The Ars Electronica Center is located on the banks of the Danube River in the western Austrian city of Linz, across from the Lentos Kunstmuseum. It's about a 15-minute tram ride from the main railway station, Linz Hauptbanhof (lines 1, 2, or 3) or 20 minutes by bus (lines 200, 201, 252, 314, and 341).
When to get there
Ars Electronica is open every day of the week except for Monday, and is closed on Christmas Eve and Day, New Year's Eve and Day, and May 1. Mornings you’ll tend to see the fewest visitors, while Saturdays are typically the busiest day of the week. Check the website for tour timings and special programming and for the “Deep Space Selection” screening schedule.
The Deep Space 8K experience
One of the highlights of a visit to Ars Electronica is the chance to check out Deep Space 8K, an immersive exhibit that uses 3D projection technology and a massive screen to bring visitors into other worlds, from galactic scenes to musical concerts, all in 8K resolution. It's free for all ticket holders, and while most of the programs are in German, there is a screening in English every day.
