POINT OF INTEREST

Asia Camera Museum Penang

49 Lebuh Muntri, George Town, Penang, 10200

Opened in 2014, the Asia Camera Museum Penang displays antique and modern cameras from across the globe, including vintage cameras from Japan, Sweden, and the United States. The permanent exhibition features more than 1,000 cameras and photographic accessories, some of which you can pick up and play around with.

The basics

Asia Camera Museum Penang has three sections: a functioning dark room, in which you can learn about how films have been developed since the start of the 19th century; a camera repair workshop, where you can see what kind of tools specialists use to repair vintage cameras; and the camera collection itself, whose interactive nature makes this museum ideal for families. For the ultimate kid-friendly afternoon, combine the Asia Camera Museum with the nearby Magic World, a magic-themed museum that makes for excellent photo opportunities.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s a small admission fee to enter the museum, which is less for students, senior citizens, and children.

  • This museum is a must for photography buffs and those wanting to learn more about the visual medium.

  • The museum is housed in a historic building that doesn’t have an elevator, so does not offer full accessibility.

How to get there

Asia Camera Museum Penang is located at 49 Lebuh Muntri in Penang near the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion. The closest bus stop is Kampung Kolam, on bus lines 12, 301, 302, 303, and 401. Penang’s Little India neighborhood is just a couple of blocks from the museum, too.

When to get there

The museum is open every day, except on public holidays such as Malaysian Independence Day, from mid-morning until early evening. It tends to be busiest around lunchtime, so arrive early or just before the last entry (around 1 hour before closing) to feel like you’ve got the place all to yourself.

Penang’s weird and wonderful museums

Asia Camera Museum Penang isn’t the only niche museum in town. The Ghost Museum provides a lighthearted glimpse into the world of the supernatural; the Owl Museum on Penang Hill is dedicated entirely to the intriguing birds; and the Upside Down Museum provides some of the most mind-bending photos you’re ever likely to take.
