Asiatique The Riverfront

2194 Charoen Krung Road, Wat Phraya Krai, Bang Kho Laem, Bangkok, Thailand, 10120

The energetic Asiatique The Riverfront—part open-air night bazaar, part shopping mall—combines the city’s old traditions and modern commercial energy. Located at the former East Asiatic Company trade docks, the complex contains more than 1,500 shops and boutiques, about 40 restaurants, and several entertainment venues.

The Basics

Nestled between the Chao Phraya River and Charoen Krung Road, Asiatique spans 12 acres and offers a variety of entertainment options, including cabaret acts and live muay thai shows. You can visit the complex on your own or on a private guided tour of the city to do some world-class shopping. If you’d rather see the complex from afar, hop on a dinner cruise up the river, or take a motorbike tour through the city.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Don’t be deterred by Asiatique’s size. The mall is divided into sections that hold just one kind of business (boutiques, restaurants, etc), so you can easily find the spot you’re looking for.

  • The complex is only open in the evenings.

  • Don’t forget to take a spin on the Asiatique Sky—a 200-foot-tall Ferris wheel with 42 gondolas that offer views of the river and the city.

How to Get There

Asiatique is located in Bangkok’s Riverside area. To reach it, have a cab drop you at the entrance, or take public transportation: There is a ferry terminal next to the complex, and a number of city buses—including the 1, 15, and 75—stop nearby, on Charoen Krung Road.

When to Get There

The weather in Bangkok is best in winter, November–March, though temperatures can still be high. The complex is only open from early evening until midnight.

Asiatique History

As the curtain closed on the 19th century, there was widespread pressure across the world to industrialize—and Thailand was not immune. Former Danish shipping giant the East Asiatic Company established a trade route between Denmark and Asia in 1897, creating Thailand’s first international port and putting the country on the trade map. After the EAC closed, its Bangkok port underwent a major renovation, which preserved its trade history and created Asiatique.
