POINT OF INTEREST

Awana Kancha

Km 23 a Pisac, Cusco, Peru

The textile mill at Awana Kancha—or the Palace of Weaving—is a culture-rich stop between Cusco and the Sacred Valley. The artisan outpost gives visitors the chance to observe traditionally dressed women weaving textiles made from the wool of alpacas kept in the outdoor yard and to take a photo op hand-feeding the animals.

The Basics

Awana Kancha is close enough to Cusco to explore in just a few hours; however, the textile mill’s vicinity to Pisac and other Inca archaeological sites means that tours often combine the outpost with other attractions on a full-day tour. First-time visitors short on time can get an introduction to Cusco’s major sights and observe local craftspeople spinning wool and weaving textiles on a half-day tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The handicrafts on sale at the co-op are arguably nicer than you’ll find in larger markets, making the mill a must-visit for travelers seeking unique souvenirs.

  • Awana Kancha is free to enter and makes for a fun and family-friendly afternoon out.

  • Scarves, sweaters, socks, and more can be purchased directly from the women who wove them at budget-friendly prices.

How to Get There

Awana Kancha is located around two-thirds of the way from Cusco to the Sacred Valley, at kilometer 23 on the Cusco–Pisac road. Travelers can take a bus from Cusco bus station and ask to be dropped off at kilometer 23, or skip the hassle of the language barrier on a guided tour.

When to Get There

Awana Kancha is open daily from 8am to 5pm. You can feed alpacas and llamas and observe the weavers whatever time you visit.

Continuing to Pisac

Boasting not one but two top Cusco attractions, the Andean village of Pisac is often included on Sacred Valley tours that stop at Awana Kancha. History buffs will be delighted by the Pisac ruins, an Inca archaeological site famous for its agricultural terraces, while travelers with a penchant for local handicrafts will enjoy browsing Pisac Indian Market, home to hundreds of stalls.
