Bait Al Baranda
Al Mina Street, Muttrah, Muscat, Oman
Discover the rich history and culture of Oman at Bait Al Baranda, a museum housed in a 1930s villa. Its galleries showcase the land’s geology and archaeology, as well as the military and political past of Oman, providing an overview of this remarkable country. Named after its signature veranda, Bait Al Baranda also provides a comprehensive overview of Omani traditions and customs.
The basics
With state-of-the-art multimedia exhibitions, Bait Al Baranda Museum immerses visitors in Oman’s past through interactive screens, captivating videos, and a stunning photo history. There’s also a diverse collection of ancient artifacts and models, each with its own story to tell. Here you can trace the fascinating journey of Oman's history from prehistoric times to the early Islamic period, Portuguese occupation, and its current dynasty. Don't miss the renowned presentation of 10,000-year-old bones, and be sure to catch the rotating seasonal exhibitions of contemporary art.
Things to know before you go
The museum is small, so you only need to dedicate an hour maximum to visiting the exhibits.
Some sections are interactive and geared more toward children than adults, so it’s a great family-friendly attraction.
It’s located very close to the Muttrah Fish Market, another sight worth exploring.
How to get there
The Bait Al Baranda Museum is located on Al Mina’a Street in Muttrah, adjacent to the Souk Muttrah. By taxi or rental car, it’s about 30 minutes from the airport. Otherwise, a local shared minibus can provide a more affordable option to Muttrah.
When to get there
The museum is open every day except Fridays and public holidays, and keeps morning and early-evening hours; it’s closed during the afternoons daily. While this impressive museum is open year-round, the best time to visit is during the cooler months, from November to April. The comfortable temperatures allow for leisurely strolls through the museum's stunning exhibits. During this time, visitors can also take advantage of exploring the nearby fort without the sweltering heat typical of Omani summers.
The unusual star attraction: dinosaur bones
A visit to Bait Al Baranda is a must for anyone seeking to understand the geological and natural history of both Oman and the rest of the world. One of the highlights of the museum is the “cut and paste” dinosaur skeleton, which was put together using bones found in the Al Khoud area of Muscat, along with borrowed bones from around the world.
