Baskerville House

Birmingham, West Midlands

One of central Birmingham’s most notable historic buildings, the Baskerville Building, was constructed nearly 100 years ago. Named for John Baskerville—the 18th-century printer and type designer whose house stood on site—the art deco Baskerville House is now a Grade II-listed architectural icon. With pride of place right on the central Centenary Square, it’s also steps from other top attractions.

The basics

One of the most recognizable and noteworthy landmarks in central Birmingham, the listed—and recently renovated—Baskerville House makes quite an impression and is an ideal destination for visiting architecture lovers and history buffs.

Although the landmark is today home to offices and university facilities and is, therefore, not open to the public, it’s still worth stopping by the central Centenary Square to admire and take photos during a walking tour of the city. Then, continue to other noteworthy historic landmarks nearby, including the adjacent Hall of Memory (an octagonal wartime memorial constructed around the same time).

Things to know before you go

  • Look out for the Industry and Genius sculpture, which stands outside Baskerville House and is a tribute to John Baskerville’s type design.
  • Centenary Square is free for all to visit and is also wheelchair-accessible.
  • Be sure to visit on a good weather day to linger in the square and admire the building’s architectural details.

How to get there

Baskerville House is located at Cambridge Street, Birmingham B1 2ND. The West Midlands Metro tram service stops steps away at the Library stop, while Birmingham New Street (the city’s largest and busiest train station) is just 10 minutes away on foot. Buses also frequent the area, as do taxis and rideshare services.

When to get there

While Baskerville House is not open to members of the public, you can stop by to admire it at any time; Centenary Square, which the building overlooks, is an always-open public square. However, it’s best to visit during typical daytime hours to admire its facade lit by daylight.

Central Birmingham architectural highlights

Baskerville House is conveniently located near several other Birmingham architectural highlights, including the Hall of Memory. Others worth seeking out include the grand Birmingham Town Hall, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Library of Birmingham (Europe’s largest public library, instantly recognizable for its modern design).
