POINT OF INTEREST

Bastione Conca

Via Mura di Tramontana Ovest, Trapani, Italy, 91100

Walk toward the west end of Trapani’s scimitar-shaped bay, and this 15th-century fortification strikes the eye with its sandstone colors and strategic position over the sea. It’s reachable via the pedestrian-friendly Mura di Tramontana—all that remains of the ancient walls along the coastline—and with an ample terrace facing the setting sun, it's probably the best place to catch a sunset in Trapani.

The basics

The bastion is situated near several of Trapani’s best-known attractions in the historic town, such as the former site of the old fish market (Vecchio Mercato di Pesce), Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Ligny Tower, making it an ideal destination for relaxing during sunset after a day of sightseeing. It also lies at the west end of the Le Mura di Tramontana coastal walkway, a lovely promenade to stroll.

Things to know before you go

  • The Bastione is always free and open to the public.

  • A small beach called Spiaggia delle Mura di Tramontana lies near the bastion.

  • The Mura di Tramontana walkway is accessible on bikes and on foot.

How to get there

The Bastione Conca is in the historic center of Trapani, near the seafront. To reach it, head toward the Lungomare Dante Alighieri and walk west along the Mura di Tramontana coastal promenade. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the city center. Alternatively, the #10 and #203 ATM buses can drop you off within a few minutes' walk of the bastion.

When to get there

Summer in Sicily can be fun but punishingly hot and full of vacationing Italians and other Europeans, so it’s best to visit in the spring or early fall, when the weather is milder and more pleasant for walking. With a terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the bastion is a great choice at the end of the day to watch the sunset.

Walking the Mura di Tramontana

The Mura di Tramontana is made up of the remnants of Trapani’s ancient city walls, following the coastline. They've been restored to create a scenic seaside walking promenade, roughly from the old fish market square to the Bastione Conca. Just beyond the Bastione, you can find other fortifications: the Fortino di S. Anna (Bastione Imperiale) and Ligny Tower, which now houses a small museum. The walk also features cafés and charming alleys leading to the city center.
