Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro da Batalha)

Batalha, Leiria

A surprisingly humble interior hides behind the lacy stonework facade, looming gargoyles, and prickly spires of Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro da Batalha), the UNESCO-recognized resting place of Portuguese royalty. Explore the myriad chapels and cloisters, before watching sunlight pool through the statement stained-glass window.

The Basics

A popular day trip from nearby Lisbon, tours to the imposing Batalha Monastery typically include stops at the equally impressive monasteries and holy sites of Fátima, Nazaré, Óbidos, and Alcobaça, although some options also incorporate Sintra and Cascais. Opt for a private tour if you’ve got limited time in the region or gain greater insight into the elements that most interest you during a themed architecture- or art-focused tour of the monastery.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Themed tours are offered daily at the monastery—prior booking is necessary to secure a spot.

  • Admission is free for a limited time on Sundays for Portugal residents, students, and children aged 12 and under.

  • Buy a combined Heritage Route admission ticket and enjoy discounted access to Batalha Monastery, as well as the Convent of Christ and Alcobaça Monastery.

  • The Batalha Monastery complex is fully accessible for wheelchair users and those with strollers.

How to Get There

Situated just 75 miles (122 kilometers) away from Lisbon, the Batalha Monastery is a popular day trip from the Portuguese capital and most easily accessed by private vehicle. Head north on the A8 or A1 motorways and park within walking distance of the monastery upon arrival. Alternatively, save the hassle of navigating and driving in an unfamiliar country and opt for a tour which includes round-trip transportation.

When to Get There

Batalha Monastery is open year-round—except New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, and Labor Day (May 1)—from morning until the late afternoon. Expect slightly extended hours between April and mid-October. Last admission is always half an hour before closing. Most organized tours visit early in the day, so stop by in the afternoon for a quieter experience.

Portugal's Heritage Route

Sometimes known as the Monastery Route or Heritage Trail, Portugal’s Heritage Route covers three destinations in Estremadura—the Batalha Monastery, as well as the Convent of Christ in Tomar and the Alcobaça Monastery, both of which date back to the 12th century. By booking a combination Heritage Route admission ticket, travelers gain discounted access to all three.
