Battersea Power Station
Circus Rd W, London, England
An architectural icon and an ex-industrial artifact, London’s Battersea Power Station traces its history back nearly a century. Instantly recognizable for its four soaring chimneys, the key landmark along the Thames River has been reborn as a leisure destination. Today, it contains a high-end shopping mall, restaurants, accommodation, and other entertainment offerings.
The basics
A former coal-fired power station may sound like an unlikely place for shopping, dining, and entertainment, but London’s redeveloped Battersea Power Station has transformed the architectural icon into a must-see destination. Begin with its 50-plus cafés and restaurants inside the station, on the riverside, and along Electric Boulevard. It’s also home to shops from dozens of international brands, from Chanel to Apple, as well as two cinemas, a hotel, a theater, and more.
For those interested in a memorable sightseeing experience, the landmark offers guided and audio tours of areas like its art deco Control Room A and attractions like Lift 109, which whisks visitors to the top of one of its chimneys for London views. Battersea Power Station can be seen on London tours, including helicopter and boat trips.
Things to know before you go
For a particularly special place to have a drink, head to the cocktail bar within historic Control Room B.
Battersea Power Station is accessible to wheelchair users and disabled visitors.
Visitors can bring their dog to the power station, provided it’s well-behaved and kept on a leash.
How to get there
It’s easy to get to Battersea Power Station via public transit. Take the Northern line of the London Underground to Battersea Power Station, or take the Circle and District lines to Sloane Square, located 12 minutes away on foot. Numerous bus lines and riverboat services also serve the area.
When to get there
Battersea Power Station is open daily. From Monday–Saturday, it’s open from midmorning until midevening, and on Sundays, it’s open from midday to early evening. Note, however, that individual shops, restaurants, and attractions may have different hours; research those in advance.
The Tate Modern
Battersea Power Station isn’t the only riverside power station transformed into a cultural venue and architectural icon. Another is the Tate Modern, one of London’s leading art museums. Head into its central Turbine Hall for evidence of its industrial past (plus an array of changing temporary installations).
