The basics

The Belgian Comic Book Center was created to celebrate comic and graphic novel art in the birthplace of some of the world’s most beloved and long-standing comic book characters. Here, fans of comic strip art can learn about their favorite series and the artists and writers who brought them to life. Spend time in the museum’s library and reading room getting closer to the characters, or learn about the conservation of vintage comics, some of which are more than 100 years old.

The museum gives special attention to The Adventures of Tintin, a cartoon character dreamed up in Belgium and brought into the hearts of millions of people worldwide. There is also a special exhibit on imagination, which centers on where the inspiration for such characters comes from, and discussions on how comic art spans genres from children’s fantasy to politics.

Things to know before you go

• The museum is suitable for all ages—it’s as engaging for adults as it is for children.

• The research library or Documentation Room has slightly different opening hours to the museum.

• Any works borrowed from the Documentation Room must only be read in the library on site.

• The library or Reading Room is open to the public and has more than 7,000 comics and graphic novels in its collection.

• Entry to the Belgian Comic Book Center is €7, and using the Documentation room costs €1.50, or €12 for a 10-day pass.

How to get there

The nearest Metro station to the Belgian Comic Book Center is Congres. It’s an easy walk from the Botanical Garden and the Old Town. Alternatively, some trams stop nearby at Station Congres or de Berlaimont—just walk a short distance from the Boulevard Pacheo, and you’re there.

When to get there

The Belgian Comic Book Center is open from 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday. It’s always closed on Mondays, and it’s possible to reserve tickets in advance through the many available guided tours in Brussels. The Documentation Room is open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10:30am and 5:30pm.
