Belgrade Theatre

Belgrade Square, Coventry, England

Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre is a performing arts venue and charitable trust that produces a range of musical theater, drama, and community workshops. Much of Coventry was destroyed during World War II, and the theatre was built in the 1950s, during the city’s reconstruction. It’s a Grade II Listed Building, so it’s worth passing even if you can’t catch a show.

The basics

Though you might not expect to find this theater in Coventry, it was named in thanks to the Serbian capital of Belgrade, which donated timber for its reconstruction. Most people visit to watch a show, so check the schedule on the theater’s website. Some visitors to the West Midlands city like to take guided or self-guided walking tours of sites of historical interest, including the Belgrade Theatre, the Lady Godiva Statue, and the Cathedral Quarter.

Things to know before you go

  • Many kid-friendly shows and events are held at the theater.

  • The theater is well-equipped for patrons with special needs, offering captioned performances and British Sign Language interpretation, among other provisions.

  • For a bite, head to the ground-floor Belgrade Café; for drinks, the Nineteen 58 Bar is upstairs.

How to get there

The Belgrade Theatre is in central Coventry, about a 10-minute walk from the bus depot and 15 minutes from the train station. There’s a public parking lot close to the theater, with plenty of accessible parking, but it can get very busy before and after shows. Coventry is 110 miles (175 kilometers) northwest of London, which takes over 2 hours by car or 3.5 hours by train.

When to get there

The Belgrade Theatre puts on shows throughout the year, in the day and evening. If you’re going to a show, leave yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot, as the nearest lots may be full. The Belgrade Café is open from morning until evening, and the Nineteen 58 Bar serves drinks until late, even on non-performance nights.

Other things to do in Coventry

While Coventry might not be as popular a tourist destination as London, Bath, or Windsor, there are many things to see and do in the city. The medieval ruins of Coventry Cathedral beside the modern reconstruction is one highlight, and the 14th-century St. Mary’s Guildhall is a must-visit for anyone interested in art and architecture. If your interests lie elsewhere, you might enjoy the Coventry Transport Museum or the Midland Air Museum.
