Belmond Hiram Bingham

Calle Roldan Distrito de Poroy, Cusco, Peru

If you’re looking for an elegant alternative to hiking the Inca Trail, take the luxurious Belmont Hiram Bingham train from Cusco to Machu Picchu. In the style of a 1920s Pullman carriage, the 84-passenger train is the crème de la crème of railway options going to the ancient citadel.

The Basics

One of the most richly-appointed railways on the line, Belmont Hirim Bingham boasts polished wood and brass details, white-cloth dining, and an observation car with floor-to-ceiling windows offering incredible views of the Andes. Onboard enjoy a pisco sour-making demonstration and live music and dancing. As an added bonus, the train is one of the earliest to reach Machu Picchu and one of the latest to leave. All-inclusive guided VIP tours typically include afternoon tea at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, a welcome drink at the station, meals and drinks on board, entrance fees, and round-trip hotel transport.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Belmond Hiram Bingham Train is an ideal trip for high-end luxury travelers.
  • Vegetarian meals and children's meals are available upon request.
  • Tours are in Spanish and English; for groups of 14 or more, other languages can be accommodated.
  • Request beforehand for wheelchair assistance.

How to Get There

The Belmond Hiram Bingham Train departs from Poroy Station, which is about 20 minutes from Cusco, and stops at the Machu Picchu Station. From there, the train provides a bus to the ruins and to a lodge for afternoon tea before heading back to Cusco.

When to Get There

The best time to go to Machu Picchu is between April to October during the dry season. If you don't mind a bit of rain and warmer temperatures, travel between November to March. Come in June for the Inca Festival of the Sun in Cusco. Held on winter solstice, the festival reenacts some parts of the Inti Raymi, an Inca festival of the olden times, and features a colorful ceremonial parade.

Who Was Mr. Bingham?

Belmond Hiram Bingham III was an American explorer who rediscovered the Inca city of Machu Picchu. Though not a trained archaeologist, he organized the exploration of forgotten Inca cities in the early 20th century. He also rediscovered Vitcos and Vilcabamba, the latter being the last Inca capital. Credited as the person who made Machu Picchu famous, a road leading to the citadel is named after him.
