Bloukrans Bridge

Garden Route, South Africa

Offering one of Earth’s highest bungee jumps, the Bloukrans Bridge arcs 710 feet (216 meters above the Bloukrans River in Tsitsikamma National Park. Its slender-looking span impresses, but travelers come for the zipline, skywalk, rappelling—and most of all—the bungee, which drops more than 650 feet (200 meters with 5 seconds of free fall.

The basics

Built in the early 1980s, the Bloukrans Bridge is an ever-popular setting for thrill-seekers looking to head towards the river below at speeds that can reach 100 mph (160 kph). Fortunately, the operator has been working on the bridge since 1997 and holds an enviable safety record; jumpers leap secured both by a harness and an ankle strap. Some travelers visit as a day trip from Storms River, but many join a Garden Route tour from Cape Town.

Things to know before you go

  • There is a significant charge for non-jumpers to watch the bungee jumps from the bridge. Follow events free on the live feed in the Cliffhanger bar and restaurant just feet away.
  • Bungee jumpers must weigh between 77 and 330 pounds (35–150 kilograms).
  • Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. The aim is freedom of movement without wardrobe malfunctions.
  • The Bloukrans Bridge and the Cliffhanger are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. The activities are not wheelchair-friendly and the minimum age is 14.

How to get there

Within Tsitsikamma National Park on South Africa’s scenic Garden Route, the Bloukrans Bridge spans the boundary between the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces. Most travelers drive from Storms River, 16 miles (26 kilometers) to the east, or stop by on a Garden Route tour that includes a bungee jump.

When to get there

The Bloukrans Bridge bungee operates in all conditions, apart from gale-force winds and thunderstorms. Jumping in summer or the summer-adjacent months (roughly October through March) makes clear skies and warm weather much more likely.

The Garden Route

One of the world’s great road trips, the Garden Route meanders for 125 miles (200 kilometers) from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east, offering sweeping vistas of lakes, beaches, forest, lagoons, and mountains, plus parks, museums, nature reserves, and more. Travel east from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, or plan a loop with a safari thrown in.
