POINT OF INTEREST

Boise Public Library

Boise, ID

Established in 1895, shortly after the city of Boise was founded, the Boise Public Library has served and grown with the community. Today, the public library consists of a main branch downtown and four satellite branches around the city. The library offers reading materials, multimedia materials, computer access, and events for the community.

The basics

While the Boise Public Library features five branches throughout the city, the downtown branch (Main Library) is the largest and oldest—it’s been in the same location (a renovated hardware building) since 1973. Visit any library branch to browse its collection of reading materials and other media, take advantage of its amenities such as computer access, attend one of its frequent events (such as readings), or admire the public artwork on display.

Things to know before you go

Only Boise residents and property owners qualify for a free library card, though reciprocal programs may be available. You can purchase non-resident cards. Anyone may use materials while inside the library. All library branches offer computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and free Wi-Fi. Shop the used bookstore (Tree City Books) inside the Main Library.

How to get there

The main/downtown branch of the Boise Public Library is located at 715 S. Capitol Boulevard. You can find additional branches at Brown Crossing (2153 E. Riverwalk Drive), Cole + Ustick (7557 W. Ustick Road), Collister (4724 W. State Street), and Hillcrest (5246 W. Overland Road). On-site parking is available at all branch locations.

When to get there

The Main Branch of the Boise Public Library is open seven days a week, while the other branches are open Monday through Saturday. The library is closed for most major public holidays, with early closures on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, too. Free public Wi-Fi is available inside all libraries when it's open and in the parking lots from 7am to 9pm. Each branch holds events throughout the year.

Unusual library features

In addition to the standard offerings like reading materials and media that all libraries offer, the Boise Public Library offers several unusual items, including sewing machines, memory kits for people with dementia, and seeds (at the Collister branch). You'll find electric vehicle charging stations at the Brown Crossing branch and outdoor seating and a fireplace at the Cole + Ustick branch.
