Broad Street
Broad Street, Bridgetown, Barbados
If you are looking to shop and pick up some trinkets to remember your visit to Barbados, Broad Street in Bridgetown is the place to go. Located a block from The Wharf Road, this street has shopping malls, duty-free shops, jewelry stores, and a few large department stores. Restaurants and bars are plentiful in this area, making it a great spot to spend an afternoon.
The basics
When visiting the capital city of Barbados, you'll want to check out the historical spots and a few white sand beaches along Carlisle Bay. Tours of Barbados often pass by Broad Street, but are unlikely to spend much time browsing along this short stretch. It can be helpful to ask your guide for tips on the best places to shop—especially if you are looking to purchase pricier items like watches and jewelry—and come back to shop independently at your leisure.
Things to know before you go
Many shops will accept US dollars and major credit cards, as well as Barbadian dollars.
Bring your passport and plane ticket if you plan to do duty-free shopping.
One block away, Swan Street offers additional shopping opportunities.
How to get there
Broad Street is a block from the wharf, and most of the shopping is on the portion of the road between Cowell and Marhill Streets. If you are coming from the Bridgetown Harbour Cruise Pier, it's a 1.1-mile (1.8-kilometer) walk along the Princess Alice Highway, which should take around 25 minutes. Alternatively, hail a taxi or take one of the multiple bus routes that stop close by.
When to get there
As a general rule of thumb, shops in Barbados are typically open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, and are closed for the afternoon on Saturdays. Many stores are not open on Sundays.
Where to eat nearby
There are quite a few options for a quick meal of local cuisine near the Broad Street shopping district, such as Tim's Restaurant and Shanti's Rum and Roti. If you walk south along the water, you'll find Lobster Alive, a seafood spot with views of Carlisle Bay. This area is also popular for its beach clubs, where you can soak in the sun and party the night away.
