POINT OF INTEREST

Buccoo Reef

Tobago, Tobago

This protected marine park is set just off the shores of Buccoo Beach, Pigeon Point, and Shore Bay, and boasts a spectacular display of aquatic life. Though parts of the coral reef are under threat from overuse from touristic activities, the local community still offers glass-bottom boat tours, plus recreational offerings such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and sustainable fishing.

The basics

Designated as a marine park in 1973 and a Ramsar site in 2006, the five reef flats that comprise Buccoo Reef are inhabited by an array of sea life, including sponges, hard corals, and tropical fish. Visitors often pair boat tours to view the reef’s aquatic world with a visit to the Nylon Pool, a calm, shallow, sandy area with clear turquoise water that’s great for swimming.

Things to know before you go

  • Most tours leave from either Store Bay or Pigeon Point.
  • If you plan on going into the water, use reef-safe sunscreen to prevent any further damage to the coral reefs.
  • Be respectful of the flora and fauna on the reefs, as they are part of a protected ecosystem.
  • Most tours provide all the necessary equipment (scuba, snorkeling, and fishing gear) for you to participate.

How to get there

Buccoo Reef is located near the southwestern tip of Tobago between Pigeon Point and Buccoo Point. Most tour operators offer hotel pickups, but the area is also accessible from Crown Point International Airport or Scarborough Harbor.

When to get there

Tobago is equatorial, offering warm weather year-round, but for clear skies plan your trip during the dry season (January through May).

Things to do near Buccoo Reef

After visiting the reef, consider exploring Pigeon Point Heritage Park, a lush coastal reserve known for having one of Tobago’s most beautiful beaches, Pigeon Point Beach. Located on 125 acres of preserve, the beach is a perfect island escape.
