Bucharest Jewish History Museum

Housed in an ornately decorated and historic synagogue dating back to 1836, Bucharest’s Jewish History Museum of Romania was founded in 1978 and contains an extensive collection of documents, books, photographs, and religious artifacts that explore the history of the Jewish people in Romania, in addition to a Holocaust memorial.

The basics

The museum contains several floors of exhibits, including those that document the Jewish presence in Romania and their contributions to Romanian culture and society, and a collection of artwork by Jewish and Romanian artists, with the top floor hosting temporary exhibitions. The museum also hosts education programs monthly. Visit independently or as part of a guided tour focused on Jewish heritage in Bucharest, which includes other sites such as the Great Synagogue, Choral Temple, and the State Jewish Theatre.

How to get there

The Bucharest Jewish History Museum is in the Jewish Quarter, on Mămulari Street. It’s a short distance from Unirii Square. You can take the metro to Piata Unirii and walk around 10 minutes to the museum.

When to get there

The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 9am to 12:30pm. It’s closed on Fridays, Saturdays, Jewish holidays, and Romanian national days. The last entry is 30 minutes before closing time. Check the schedule for special events and exhibits.

Other area highlights include the Great Synagogue, also home to the Holocaust Museum. The Choral Temple remains one of the city’s most important religious sites and has been restored. Visitors can also catch a show or production at the Jewish State Theatre. These sites are all within walking distance of the Jewish History Museum and are included in a suggested route of the most important sites of the quarter by the museum.
