Bundeshaus

Bundesplatz 3, Bern, Switzerland, 3003

The Bundeshaus, or Parliament Building, is the central seat of the Swiss government in Bern. This large structure on the Bundesplatz, designed by architect Hans Auer and completed in 1902, is impressive on the outside, but quite a sight on the inside. Guided tours allow visitors to see the West Wing, East Wing, and the domed hall that’s adorned with stained glass and sculptures.

The basics

Guided tours of the Bundeshaus are available Tuesday to Saturday. These hour-long tours are free, but limited to 30 participants, and need to be reserved in advance. Saturdays are the only days English tours are offered, so if you’re hoping to learn more about the Bundeshaus, consider a third-party city tour.

Many tours of Bern visit the Bundesplatz and discuss the Bundeshaus’ role in Swiss society. You can opt for a self-guided tour or book a tour with a local guide.

Things to know before you go

  • The building is also referred to as the Federal Palace.

  • Bring your passport or ID; adults must deposit it when taking a tour.

  • Tours are not offered when Parliament is in session.

  • The glass dome has four stained-glass windows referencing Swiss history.

How to get there

The Bundeshaus is in the center of Bern on the Bundesplatz. Multiple bus lines stop here, but you can easily reach it from any point of the Old Quarter or the main train station. If you’re using the Zytglogge astronomical clock as your starting point, walk west down Marktgasse then turn south down Kafiggasschen.

When to get there

Along with guided tours, the Bundeshaus is open to visitors when Parliament is in session; however you plan to visit, be sure to book ahead. The building also opens its doors on select days through the year, so check the official website for details, and arrive early on these days to beat the crowds.

Experience the Bundesplatz

Even if you don’t explore the interior of the Bundeshaus, it’s worth visiting the main square where it stands: Bundesplatz. This gathering space has 26 fountains, creating a giant splash pad for the young and young at heart. Twice-weekly markets take place here, as do a host of other events that change with the seasons.
