Burrell Collection
Pollok Country Park, 2060 Pollokshaws Road, Bellahouston, Glasgow, Scotland, G43 1AT
A Glasgow gem, the Burrell Collection is a treasure trove of 9,000 objects collected by Sir William Burrell, a shipping merchant, and his wife, Constance Burrell, who gifted their collection to the city in 1944. A visit to this eclectic collection reveals the depth of the Burrells’ passion for collecting.
The basics
From paintings by Manet and Cézanne to one of the UK’s most significant collections of Chinese art, the Burrell Collection is notably broad and is housed in a purpose-built home in the heart of Pollok Country Park, Glasgow’s largest green space. The collection is divided into six themed galleries that lead visitors through 6,000 years of history. Visits are typically self-guided, but tours are available several times a week.
The Burrell Collection is often included in sightseeing tours of Glasgow, alongside other notable cultural institutions such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
Things to know before you go
Admission to the Burrell Collection is free of charge.
The building is wheelchair accessible, and manual wheelchairs are available from the front desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
Facilities include two cafés, a restaurant, and a gift shop.
How to get there
From Glasgow Central railway station, frequent trains travel 10 minutes south to Shawlands and Pollockshaws West stations—the former is a 10-minute walk from the Burrell Collection; the latter is a 5-minute walk. Regular buses from Glasgow City Centre reach Shawlands and Pollockshaws West in 20 minutes.
When to get there
The Burrell Collection is open every day, all year round, from mid-morning until early evening—the restaurant and cafés keep similar hours but close slightly earlier. From Lunar New Year celebrations to free Taiji Qigong sessions, the museum hosts various special events: keep an eye on the website for details.
Pollock Park
Pollock Park is another symbol of Glaswegian altruism: Anne Maxwell Macdonald gifted the park to the city in 1966 under the condition that it remain public. As Glasgow's largest park, its extensive woodlands are home to walking trails, walled gardens, a children’s play park, and a fold (herd) of Highland cattle. A free electric shuttle bus links the park entrance with the Burrell Collection.
