Byodo-in Temple

Renge-116 Uji, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, 611-0021

If you think this classic furled-roof temple looks familiar, take a look at a 10-yen coin and you’ll see why. One of Japan's most famous temples—and an UNESCO World Heritage Site—the temple’s 11th-century Phoenix Hall graces both the 10-yen coin and 10,000-yen note. It’s also one of the best examples of Heian-era architecture.

The basics

This temple on the banks of the Uji River ranks among the most popular half-day trips from Kyoto. Itineraries to Uji typically include a visit to the temple to see its statue of Amida and 42 Bodhisattvas, as well as Nakanoshima Park, Ujibashi Bridge, and a traditional teahouse. A set time ticket is required to visit the interior of Phoenix Hall. Active travelers looking to stretch their legs and cover more ground can visit the temple as part of a full-day cycling tour through the neighborhoods of eastern Kyoto.

Things to know before you go

  • Byodo-in is a must-visit for spiritual travelers and those interested in temple architecture.
  • Remember to dress respectfully, as this is an active place of worship.
  • The temple has wheelchair-accessible ramps, but some gravel paths in the courtyard might be difficult to navigate.

How to get there

Byodo-in Temple is in Uji, 11 miles (18 kilometers) southeast of central Kyoto. The most convenient way to get there is on a guided tour, but it’s also possible to take the train to Keihan Uji Station.

When to get there

The number of visitors allowed inside the Phoenix Hall is limited, so it’s a good idea to purchase a ticket ahead of time. Keep in mind that tickets have a set time for entrance. The temple is busiest on weekends and holidays during April, May, October, and November.

Hoshokan Museum

The Hoshokan Museum opened on the grounds of Byodo-in Temple in 2001. This underground museum showcases a collection of Buddhist statuary, a temple bell, and a series of ornate roof tiles excavated from the original building of the Heian Period.
