POINT OF INTEREST

Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve

Santa Fe, Puntarenas, 50503

Perched on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is considered one of Costa Rica’s first natural reserves, and thus spurred a trend that resulted in more than 30 national parks and reserves. Inside the park, you can explore lush forests and white-sand beaches, and go on the lookout for exoitc wildlife on a hike.

The Basics

In an effort to protect the biodiverse swath of land and sea, visitors were initially prohibited from entering the park. Now, however, the number of visitors is capped to 40 per day, meaning that advance booking is essential. You can secure an admission ticket to the park by booking a tour that takes care of logistics such as transport and reservation, and increases your chances of spotting elusive wildlife.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The reserve is a must-see for nature lovers and conservation enthusiasts.

  • There are no shops or restaurants near the park so bring plenty of food and water.

  • Bring sturdy shoes for the hike to the ocean and a swimsuit if you want to cool off at the end.

  • The park’s spectacular views and prevalent wildlife make for great photo opportunities.

How to Get There

The easiest way to reach the remote park is on a guided tour that includes hotel pickup and drop-off. However, if you’d prefer to visit the park on your own, you can drive to the park’s ranger station (just south of Cabuya) or take a bus from Montezuma to Cabuya and walk the rest of the way. Buses run on a limited schedule so be sure to ask about a return bus before you disembark.

When to Get There

The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8am to 4pm. To increase the chance of sun, visit during the peninsula’s dry season from November through April. If you plan to hike during the dry season, start early so you can avoid the heat of the day.

Hiking in Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve

There are two designated hiking trails in the reserve; visitors are required to stay on the trails to protect the surrounding environment. Ambitious hikers can take the rugged 2.6-mile (4.2-kilometer) Sueco Trail from the ranger station to the beach. Or, for an easier walk, you can stay closer to the ranger station on the 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) Danes Trail loop.
