How to get there

Cape Espichel is located about an hour south of Lisbon. The best way to experience the beauty of the coastline is by renting a car. Free parking is available at the cape, where you can explore on foot. Otherwise, it is possible with some planning to reach it by public transport. You'll first have to take a bus from Lisbon to Sesimbra and then another from Sesimbra to Cape Espichel.

When to get there

While it's a stunning spot all year round, the best time to visit is summer. The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for exploring the breathtaking cliffs and scenic beaches. However, if you're not a fan of crowds and prefer a more peaceful atmosphere, spring and autumn are also great options. In winter, the coastal weather can be wild, with wind, poor visibility, and temperatures becoming quite chilly.

The intriguing chapel

From the 13th century onwards, Cabo Espichel has been a place of pilgrimage. According to legend, two local fishermen witnessed the Virgin Mary emerging from the sea on a mule at this very location. Perilously close to the cliff edge, the whitewashed Ermida de Memoria (Memory Chapel) commemorates this event. This quirky little chapel also makes for a fantastic viewpoint, with a stunning outlook over the dramatic cliffs and coastline below.
