POINT OF INTEREST

Cala Fornells

Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca

A short walk from the town of Peguera, Cala Fornells is a compact cove with clear, calm waters and a mix of rocky and sandy shorelines. It’s less crowded than some of the better-known beaches on the island, and provides particularly good conditions for snorkeling.

The basics

Cala Fornells is a lovely little cove that makes a great retreat if you’re looking for a (relatively) quiet place to spend a day without having to venture too far from Palma de Mallorca. While many people drive or take the bus here, you can also visit by sea on a boat excursion. Options range from glass-bottom boat tours to customizable private boat charters.

Things to know before you go

  • Cala Fornells is a must-visit for people who want to do some light snorkeling straight from the shore. Bring your own gear.
  • There aren't any changing rooms or lifeguards at the beach, but there is a small beach bar where you can get drinks.
  • Lounge chairs with parasols are available to rent.
  • The beach is not wheelchair accessible and is rocky in some spots.

How to get there

Cala Fornells is about a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk from the town of Peguera on Mallorca's southwestern coast. The easiest way to get there from Palma de Mallorca is by driving or taking a taxi, which takes around 20 minutes. You can also take the bus line 101, 102, or A11 from Palma to Peguera and walk the rest of the way.

When to get there

Cala Fornells is at its hottest during the peak summer months of July and August, when you can expect plenty of sunshine and warm waters—plus some crowds, too (though not as many as at more famous beaches). If you come during peak season and want to avoid the crowds, it’s smart to get to the beach earlier in the day.

Es Trenc Beach

If you're looking for blindingly white sands and turquoise waters, head to Es Trenc Beach on the southern coast of the island. This unspoiled stretch is part of a protected park, which means you won't see any of the construction or commercial activity found on other popular beaches in Majorca. It's also a great place for families, with shallow, kid-friendly waters.
