POINT OF INTEREST

Cala Gat Beach

Capdepera, Spain, 07590

Just a short distance from the resort town of Cala Ratjada in northeastern Mallorca, Cala Gat (meaning the “bay of cats”) is one of the area’s loveliest beaches. Small and sandy, with beautifully clear turquoise waters, it’s sheltered from the waves by rocky headlands. Boats are not permitted here, which makes it easy to have a relaxing paddle.

The basics

The Cala Ratjada resort area boasts a number of beaches, of which Cala Gat is among the most popular. Accessible from Cala Ratjada by promenade, it’s an easy stroll away; bring your towel, snorkel, and sun protection, and get ready to make the most of the sun, sand, and surf.

Even if you’re not visiting in the summer, it’s still worth stopping by to admire views from the cove and make the most of the region’s hiking and walking trails. You can also experience a new perspective on Cala Gat—as well as the region’s other coastal sights—during a sailing tour.

Things to know before you go

  • A beach bar with food, drinks, and bathrooms is located on-site, though shower facilities are not available.

  • Cala Gat is overseen by a lifeguard, so visitors can swim with confidence.

  • Owing to its gentle waters and soft sand, Cala Gat is considered a good beach for visiting families.

  • Because the beach is quite small, arrive early to claim your spot on the sand.

How to get there

Cala Gat is less than 1 mile (1.3 kilometers) east of Cala Ratjada, one of northeastern Mallorca’s major resort hubs. It’s just a 5-minute car or taxi ride away, and can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot via the Passeig ses Àmfores.

When to get there

Cala Gat is a lovely destination all throughout the year. It’s at its most popular during the summer months, when Cala Ratjada resort-goers flock to its narrow stretch of sand. For a calmer experience, aim for the September shoulder season, when the water should still be comfortably warm for swimming.

Cala Moll

Cala Moll—also known as Playa de Son Moll—is the largest beach in the Cala Ratjada area. Known for its idyllic white-sand locale, and for the surrounding restaurants and other venues that make staying all day appealing, it’s worth visiting in addition to Cala Gat.
