Cardo

The basics

The Cardo is a great place to get a glimpse of what Jerusalem looked like 1,600 years ago. The oldest part was laid down in the 2nd century, back when cardos (urban thoroughfares) were a standard feature of Roman cities. Located in the Jewish Quarter, the Cardo is famous for its arched corridors and ancient pillars. Walking tours of the area will likely take you for a stroll down the popular lane.

Things to know before you go

• The Cardo features on the famous Madaba Map, a mosaic map that depicts the ancient Middle East. While you’ll have to travel to Madaba, Jordan to see the real thing, the Cardo features a replica

• There’s a sunken section of the Cardo near the main square of the Jewish Quarter where you can see recreations of Roman-era shops. During special events, costumed actors even appear dressed in period-authentic clothing.

• Continue down the Cardo and you’ll end up in the Muslim Quarter. The covered passageway is the perfect place to wander in case you get hit with rainy weather.

• Prices in the Cardo are usually marked, but it’s generally okay to practice your haggling skills.

How to get there

You can reach the main section of the Cardo via Zion Gate in the Jewish Quarter. It continues northward toward Damascus Gate in the Muslim Quarter. You can enter at either end: If you’re more interested in shopping, then start in the souks by Damascus Gate. If you want to see the preserved Roman ruins and archaeological excavations, then go through Zion Gate.

When to get there

The Cardo is open every day for regular business hours—but you may want to confirm ahead of your visit. To beat the crowds, arrive during the first hour of the morning or the hour before closing time. If visiting in summer, then sticking to those timings will also help you escape the hottest part of the day.

Exploring Byzantine Jerusalem: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Dating back to the 4th century, this spectacular church was first commissioned by Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. The site is believed to be where Jesus was crucified and buried. While it’s gone through several repairs and reconstructions since then, the building retains many of its original Byzantine design elements and is a sacred pilgrimage site to Christians worldwide.
