POINT OF INTEREST

Carytown

Richmond, Virginia

Stretching nine blocks in the heart of Richmond, Carytown is a charming district for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Known as the “mile of style,” the area features more than 230 shops and restaurants, emphasizing independently owned boutiques, eclectic shops, and the historic Byrd Theater.

Despite the name, Carytown is only one street, stretching nine blocks from Powhite Parkway to the Boulevard. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll. Leave yourself enough time to browse the many shops, stop for a bite to eat or drink, or catch a screening at the Byrd Theater. Carytown is easy to explore independently. For deeper insights, opt for a food-tasting or self-guided mural tour. Carytown is also included in some city sightseeing tours, including by tuk-tuk.

  • Carytown is ideal for shoppers and foodies.

It’s accessible by public transportation, including the 7, 20, and 78 buses. It’s also close to the VA-195. Parking can be found on the street itself or at lots at Crenshaw and Dooley or Sheppard and Colonial.

The Carytown Farmers Market is held every Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Visit in March for the French Film Festival and in August for the Watermelon Festival.

The Byrd Theater is one of the highlights of Carytown. The national historic landmark shows movies daily and holds weekend performances on its Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. The World of Mirth offers an assortment of unusual toys. Music lovers should head to Plan9 Records. For culinary gifts, look to Ladles & Linen and designer goods at thrift store Clementine.
