POINT OF INTEREST

Cascada de Misol-Ha (Misol-Ha Waterfall)

Chiapas, Chiapas, 29960

In the depths of the Chiapas jungle, the Misol-Ha Waterfall tumbles 115 feet (35 meters) into a turquoise pool below and provides refreshing respite from the hot and humid surroundings. Take a dip in the cool pool and swim beneath the falls or venture behind them on foot to explore a hidden cave complex.

The Basics

There are several ways to experience the beauty of the Misol-Ha Waterfall, which is typically visited alongside Agua Azul or the Palenque archaeological ruins. Whether you want to depart from Palenque, San Cristóbal de las Casas, or Villahermosa, choose from shared or private tours or make the most of your time in the region with multi-day excursions.

The latter typically depart from the Riviera Maya and pass by the Misol-Ha Waterfall as well as several other key natural and archaeological landmarks. Highlights of the Misol-Ha Waterfall are the tilapia farm, viewing deck, and cave, plus the option to swim in the pool at the base of the falls.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A small admission fee is payable at Misol-Ha Waterfall.

  • Wear slip-resistant shoes, especially if you plan on visiting the cave or viewing deck.

  • There’s an on-site restaurant and cabins available for overnight stays.

  • You can take guided tours to the viewing platform, cave, and tilapia farm.

  • Misol-Ha Waterfall isn’t fully wheelchair or stroller accessible.

How to Get There

Misol-Ha Waterfall is situated 13 miles (21 kilometers) south of Palenque and most travelers find it easiest to arrive by private vehicle. To save yourself the hassle of renting a car in Chiapas, opt for an excursion that includes round-trip transportation.

When to Get There

Misol-Ha Waterfall is accessible daily from the early morning to the evening and is quietest right after it opens. If you plan on visiting independently, get there early to enjoy the waterfall to yourself. The water at Misol-Ha Waterfall is generally murkier than usual during the April to October rainy season.

What to Do Nearby

Visits to Misol-Ha are typically paired with stops at the nearby Agua Azul Waterfalls or the Palenque ruins, although many guided excursions pass by all three. However, visitors can also combine a visit to the Misol-Ha Waterfall with explorations of the somewhat remote archaeological sites of Yaxchilán and Bonampak.
