POINT OF INTEREST

Cascada el Aguacero

Chiapas, Mexico

A multi-tiered waterfall tumbling into the steep Rio La Venta canyon, Cascada el Aguacero is one of the most popular natural attractions in Chiapas. The most spectacular views can be found at the bottom of the falls, where sprays of water turn into a cool, breezy mist.

The basics

The trek to Cascada el Aguacero begins with a long, steep descent to the base of the falls. Depending on the season, you may be able to hike along the riverbed, wade through shallow pools, or even go for a swim in an underground river. While it’s possible to visit on your own, a local guide can provide the best information about safety and conditions.

Some guided tours combine a trip to Cascada el Aguacero with other Chiapas attractions like Palenque, where you can view ancient Maya ruins. Other options include rappelling in nearby Sima de las Cotorras or taking a multi-day tour of Chiapas’ natural wonders.

Things to know before you go

  • You have to walk down (and back up) a 740-step staircase to reach the falls. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring trekking poles if needed.
  • Cascada el Aguacero is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Temperatures in the canyon can vary widely based on the season and the time of day. Wear layers and check the weather before your trip.
  • Dispersed overnight camping is available for a fee.

How to get there

The easiest way to reach Cascada el Aguacero is on a guided tour from Tuxtla Gutiérrez or San Cristóbal de las Casas. It’s also possible to travel by colectivo, or public bus, but you may have to transfer and you won’t be able to get as close to the entrance.

When to get there

Head to the waterfall during the dry season (December to April) for the most opportunities to explore. Lower water levels let you wade through the pool at the base of the falls and visit an underground river in a nearby cave. Cascada el Aguacero generally isn't very crowded, but you’re likely to see more people on weekends and holidays.

El Ocote Biosphere Reserve

Cascada el Aguacero is located in El Ocote Biosphere Reserve, which is listed as a UNESCO-MAB program, focused on strengthening relationships between people and their environments. El Ocote is home to hundreds of species of plants and animals and is notable for its size, diversity, and ecological importance. Spend anywhere from a few hours to a few days exploring all that the reserve has to offer.
