Cat Street Tokyo
3 Chome-18, Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo
Although feline fanatics might be disappointed by Cat Street Tokyo, fashion aficionados won’t be. The mostly pedestrianized street running between Harajuku and Shibuya in central Tokyo, is where the “cool cats” of fashion walk. It’s not as youth-centric as other parts of Harajuku, so travelers with different tastes can enjoy shopping here.
The basics
While Harajuku and Shibuya are central Tokyo districts often known for their frenetic pace and crowded alleys, Cat Street is a notable exception. Actually named Kyu-Shibuya-gawa Yuhodoro, meaning Old Shibuya River Pedestrian Lane, It’s a relaxed place to stroll and browse stores, which include international and Japanese chains, as well as small boutiques with one-off finds. Many people visit independently while checking out Harajuku or Shibuya on foot, but shopping and pop culture tours are a worthwhile way to explore the area.
Things to know before you go
- The street is about half a mile (800 meters) long, so although you don’t need much time to walk from one end to the other, plan a couple hours if you want to shop.
- The eateries here tend to be hole-in-the-wall fast food joints and casual cafés, many of which are great for a quick pitstop.
- There are several places to stay in the area, from capsule hotels to more upmarket accommodation.
How to get there
There are many subway and train stations in the area, including Meiji-jingumae Harajuku Station (on Tokyo Metro’s Chiyoda and Fukutoshin Lines), Omote-Sando Station (on Tokyo Metro’s Chiyoda, Ginza, and Hanzomon Lines), and Harajuku Station (on the JR Yamanote Line). Cat Street is about a 10-minute walk from each station.
When to get there
Cat Street can become very busy during weekends, especially around the subway and train stations in the area. Plan to visit on weekdays for a quieter experience and to miss the crowds. Shops and restaurants have their own opening hours, but are typically open from late morning until evening.
Stroll down Omote Sando
If you’re coming from the north, you can reach Cat Street via Omote Sando, and it’s worth taking time to browse this upmarket boulevard. Along with Ginza, it’s one of Tokyo’s most luxurious shopping strips. There are many examples of stylish modern architecture and the zelkova trees that line the boulevard are lovely year-round.
