Cathedral Museum (Dommuseum)
Domplatz 1, Salzburg, Salzburg, 5020
Situated inside the upper floors of the Salzburg Cathedral, this museum features a permanent exhibit of religious items, primarily from the 8th through 18th centuries. Objects on display include reliquary crosses, a monstrance, a Roman missal, and an intriguing Cabinet of Curiosities. The Cathedral Museum’s interiors are also quite impressive, with chessboard-style marble floors and ornately plastered domed interiors.
The basics
The museum is part of the Salzburg DomQuartier, a complex that collectively manages some of the most important attractions in and around the Salzburg Cathedral, namely the State Rooms of the Residenz, the Residenzgalerie, and St. Peter’s Museum. Book the official DomQuartier tour to explore all of these sites, including the Cathedral Museum; tours are available in German, French, English, and Italian, though any non-German tours come with an extra surcharge. You can also take a self-guided audio tour through the complex, which is available in 10 languages and can be downloaded to your phone for free at any point before your trip.
Things to know before you go
- The museum is a must-see for fans of medieval or decorative art.
- You can borrow wheelchairs and folding stools that double as walking sticks from the ticket desk at the Porter’s Lodge. There are also elevators available for visitors with limited mobility, but anyone using them must be accompanied by a staff member.
- There’s a museum shop at the Cathedral Museum selling books and souvenirs.
- To visit the museum, you’ll need to buy a DomQuartier ticket, which will also grant you access to all other attractions in the complex. Admission to the main part of the Cathedral is free.
How to get there
The museum is situated inside the Salzburg Cathedral, in Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt). It’s within walking distance of many of the city’s key attractions, including Mozartplatz and Mozart’s Birthplace. Line 3 of the S-Bahn stops at Rathaus, a 4-minute walk away, and offers direct service to the central train station.
When to get there
The museum and other DomQuartier attractions are open every day of the week except Tuesday, and are closed annually on December 24th. The weeks leading up to Christmas are particularly festive in Salzburg, and there’s a Christmas market staged just outside the Cathedral at the Domplatz (Cathedral Square). You can hear the cathedral organ in action Monday through Saturday at noon, except during special masses.
Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg)
Before or after your museum visit, be sure to check out the main part of the 17th-century Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg), one of the city’s top attractions. Highlights include a bronze baptismal font that was used for Mozart’s baptism and a crypt where you can see the foundations of previous incarnations of the cathedral that stood at the same site.
