Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock Trailhead, Sedona, Sedona, AZ, 86351

An icon of Arizona, Cathedral Rock is often emblazoned on postcards and tourist materials—and rightly so, as the towering 4,965-foot (1,513-meter) sandstone butte stands sentinel over Sedona’s red-rock landscape. The formation draws camera-toting visitors to capture its glow at sunrise, spiritual travelers to soak up its healing vortex energy, and hikers to trek up the short but steep Cathedral Rock Trail.

The basics

Cathedral Rock is one of the most photographed natural attractions south of the Grand Canyon. Many sightseeing tours from Sedona include a stop-off at Cathedral Rock and other red-rock attractions, such as Bell Rock, Snoopy Rock, and Sedona Airport Scenic Lookout. For travelers of a spiritual leaning, Cathedral Rock is also believed to be a vortex—a mystical area of high energy—and is often visited as part of spiritual tours. For a truly memorable view of the natural wonder, a helicopter tour will fly you over the crimson buttes.

Things to know before you go

  • If you plan on hiking, be sure to wear shoes with good traction as the rocks here can be slippery.
  • The parking lot at Cathedral Rock is small and often fills; be prepared to wait for a space.
  • Bring water—it gets hot on the rock—and a camera to capture the views.

How to get there

Cathedral Rock is situated just southwest of Sedona, Arizona. Follow Route 179 south from Sedona, exiting onto Back O Beyond Road. Driving from Sedona takes about 10 minutes.

When to get there

Weekends are busiest. There is little shade at Cathedral Rock, so if you’re visiting in summer, come in early morning or late afternoon. If you plan on hiking, avoid going after rain as the trails are very slippery when wet.

Hiking Cathedral Rock Trail

Cathedral Rock Trail leads from the base of the rock up to a saddle connecting two of the main spires. Though the out-and-back trail is just 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers) long, it’s not for the faint of heart, with steep sections and some scrambling required.

Ways to explore

Hiking Cathedral Rock provides some of the best red-rock views in Arizona, though the climb is challenging—and parking near the trailhead can be tricky. Take the guesswork out of the adventure by joining one of many guided Sedona hikes, from geology-focused climbs to spiritual and yoga-infused journeys.

If you’d prefer to admire Cathedral Rock from a distance, you can do so on a scenic helicopter flight or an off-roading tour through the Coconino National Forest. For an overview of Sedona’s highlights, including natural wonders and the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, book a sightseeing tour by van or e-bike.

Accessibility

Cathedral Rock Trail is not wheelchair accessible, but you can enjoy views of the formation from wheelchair-friendly viewpoints around Sedona, such as Airport Mesa.

Age limits

The hiking trail requires some rock scrambling and may be challenging for small children.

What to pack

Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated in the intense desert sunshine, as well as snacks and a camera to capture the views.

What to wear

There’s no shade on Cathedral Rock Trail, so wear a sun hat and breathable clothing, plus hiking shoes with good traction for climbing up and downhill.

Not allowed

Smoking, littering, parking at the trailhead without a Red Rock Pass

Amenities

While there’s a vault toilet at the trailhead, parking and other amenities are limited.

Address

Cathedral Rock is located on the south side of Sedona. You can drive there, but since parking is sparse (or sometimes closed completely) at the trailhead, it’s often best to use the city’s shuttle service or visit on a guided tour.

Driving

From central Sedona, head south on SR-179, then west on Back O Beyond Road for a short distance before pulling into the trailhead parking lot. The lot is closed Thursday to Sunday, when the Sedona Shuttle Connect provides service to the trailhead.

Public transportation

The Sedona Shuttle Connect runs to the Cathedral Rock Trailhead from the North SR 179 Park and Ride lot all day from Thursday to Sunday. Schedules are subject to change, so check ahead.

Best times to visit

It’s well worth visiting Cathedral Rock at sunrise—not only for the incredible photo opportunities, but also to score a parking spot and hike at the coolest time of day.

Best days to visit

Avoid the stress of parking by hiking Cathedral Rock Trail from Thursday to Sunday, when the free Sedona Shuttle Connect runs every 15 minutes from morning to evening.

Best months to visit

March–May and September–November provide the most comfortable—and safest—temperatures for hiking Cathedral Rock Trail, which is completely exposed to the desert sun.
