POINT OF INTEREST

CCTV Headquarters

32 E. 3rd Ring Middle Road, Beijing, Northern China, 100020

The China Central Television (or CCTV Headquarters is situated within an unusually shaped skyscraper in Beijing’s central business district. This seemingly gravity-defying structure, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, is playfully nicknamed "Big Pants" among Beijing locals.

The basics

While visitors are not allowed access to the CCTV Headquarters, the outside of the building is an attraction in itself. Security remains tight, particularly after fireworks during the Chinese New Year festivities of 2009 caused a fire in the Television Cultural Center—which sits adjacent to the main building. The building is almost always a stop on modern architecture tours of Beijing, as well as night tours, when the façade is illuminated.

Things to know before you go

  • The CCTV Headquarters is a must-see for architecture buffs.
  • Visitors are not permitted inside the building.
  • Don’t forget your camera; the Big Pants have become an icon of Beijing.

How to get there

CCTV Headquarters is well connected by public transportation. Numerous city buses stop at Guanghuaqiao Bei Station nearby, or you can take Subway Line 10 to Jintaixizhao Station and leave through Exit C.

When to get there

The CCTV Headquarters building looks best around sunrise or sunset, or when illuminated after dark.

Where to Snap Photos of the CCTV Headquarters

While views of the skyscraper are excellent from the ground, there are a few spots that offer an even better vantage point. Head to the top of the Rosewood Beijing for stellar views from the hotel’s cocktail lounge, or sit down for a meal or drink at one of the terrace bars at China World Mall.
