Cedar Forest of Alyko
C/ de Saridakis 29, Palma, Illes Balears
Blanketing a wild stretch of western coastline on Naxos, the Cedar Forest of Alyko is one of the most unspoiled corners of this Cyclades island. Thick tangles of cedar, juniper, heather, wild thyme, and other Mediterranean flora cover these protected dunes bordering golden sand beaches, and the water here is a dozen shades of blue. The peninsula is ideal for walkers and swimmers seeking a quiet break far from the tourist crowds.
The basics
Once slated for development by a luxury resort—you can still spot the overgrown footprint of the abandoned hotel among the shrubs—the Cedar Forest of Alyko is a highlight of yacht, sailboat, and catamaran tours along the western coastline of Naxos. The undeveloped Kedros, Hawaii, Mikro Alyko, and Alyko coves beckon with crystalline waters and soft sand backed by the lush Mediterranean greenery of the cedar forest. You can also visit as part of an island driving tour or on your own after exploring the sights on Naxos.
Things to know before you go
- There aren’t services or shaded areas on the beaches lining the Cedar Forest of Alyko, so bring an umbrella or beach tent, plenty of water and snacks, and ample sunscreen.
- The southern beaches of Hawaii and Alyko can be reached by car, but the northern beach of Kedros can only be accessed on foot along a trail through the brush.
- The water is shallow and clear along the coastline, though easier road access and the cove sheltering Alyko beach make this the most family-friendly option.
- None of the beaches or trails are accessible by wheelchair or stroller.
How to get there
You’ll need to rent a car (or scooter) or book a tour to reach the Cedar Forest of Alyko. The Hawaii, Mikro Alyko, and Alyko beaches are along the paved access road into the peninsula, and there is parking along the street; Kedros Beach can only be reached along a walking path or by boat.
When to get there
The summer heat is unforgiving on this sun-soaked peninsula and there is almost no shade in the forest or on the beach. Visit in the cooler morning or evening hours if you plan to hike the paths, and avoid the midday hours on the beach unless you have an umbrella or sun shade.
The best beaches on Naxos
With their wild beauty, the beaches lining the Cedar Forest of Alyko are among the most stunning stretches of coastline on Naxos, but their remote location and lack of services may not be for everyone. For clear water and soft sand with full-service beach clubs, tavernas for dining, and easy accessibility, Agios Prokopios and Plaka—both on the western coast just south of Naxos town—are top options. Families prefer Saint George beach, with its shallow water and location in Naxos town.
