POINT OF INTEREST

Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya

Av 20 de Noviembre, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico, 29200

A small museum dedicated to Maya textile art, the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya is a must for anyone interested in San Cristóbal de las Casas’ Indigenous handicrafts. Located in a historic cloister in the complex of Santo Domingo church, the museum is also a tranquil refuge for visitors seeking a respite from the town center’s hustle and bustle.

The basics

Textiles have been a powerful form of artistic expression in Maya communities within Mexico and Guatemala for centuries. While visitors can find many embroidered fabrics for sale throughout San Cristóbal de las Casas’ markets and gift shops, many people don’t know the meaning and history behind the town’s colorful Indigenous clothing. This museum, situated over two floors, gives a detailed overview—a fantastic primer for first-time visitors to Chiapas. The lower level displays other artifacts, including religious objects.

Things to know before you go

  • Don’t rush through the exhibit. While the museum is small, it takes time to admire the intricate details on each textile piece, woven by hand. Visitors can see the embroidered fabrics up close through glass-enclosed drawers.

  • The Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya is located next to a sprawling open-air market with many souvenirs—including textiles—for sale. Stop by after you’ve visited the museum, once you’re able to decipher some of the more popular motifs.

  • There’s a gift shop on-site, but it doesn’t always keep the same opening hours as the museum. Expect high-quality handmade products, though at higher prices than you’ll find in the market.

  • The signage is mostly in Spanish.

How to get there

The Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya can be easily reached on foot from most places within San Cristóbal de las Casas. Count on about a 10-minute walk from the Plaza de la Paz, where many walking tours of the city depart. Since the museum is tucked away behind the Mercado San Cristóbal, it might be hard to find the entrance at first glance, so you may need to ask around.

When to get there

Conventional wisdom says to plan a trip to San Cristóbal de las Casas during the dry season in Chiapas, roughly from November to April. However, this is also the busiest time—expect bigger crowds and higher prices. The rainy season, typically starting in June, is another good option. It still has sunny days, while the occasional afternoon burst of rain makes for an atmospheric backdrop for museum visits.

Just outside of town

Interested in learning more about Maya textile art, or perhaps watching a loom demonstration? Then head to the village of Zinacantán, about 20 minutes by car from San Cristóbal de las Casas. It’s easy to reach by taxi, while guided tours provide transportation and also typically include a stop in Chamula, a Tzotzil town famous for its hybrid Catholic-Indigenous Church of San Juan Chamula.
