Chaoyang Park
Beijing, Northern China
Built in 1984 on the site of a former imperial palace, Beijing’s Chaoyang Park is the largest park in the city at 714 acres (289 hectares). Visitors enjoy relaxing or boating at Lotus Lake, exploring the artworks and fountains on display, treating the kids to amusement park rides, taking a bike ride, or playing basketball.
The Basics
Visitors to Chaoyang Park can rent bicycles, electric cars, and a variety of boats to explore the 168-acre (68-hectare) lake within the park. Themed areas include Art Square with its European-style fountains and sculptures, and Ecological Valley with aquatic plants and trees. You can visit with a private tour that includes a Mongolian yurt dinner and local craft beer, as well as stops at local landmarks and transportation to and from your hotel.
Things to Know Before You Go
Chaoyang Park is a great destination for couples, families, and anyone looking for a break from the busy city streets.
Wear comfortable shoes and prepare to walk; the park is nearly 2 miles (2.8 kilometers) long and a mile (1.5 kilometers) wide.
Entering the park requires a small admission fee; bike, boat, and electric car rentals cost extra.
How to Get There
To get to Chaoyang Park, take the Beijing subway (Line 14) to Chaoyang Gongyuan (Chaoyang Park) Station. Leave through Exit B to arrive at the south gate to the park. Several public buses also stop nearby.
When to Get There
Fall and spring, when temperatures are mild, are the best seasons to enjoy the park. Try to avoid Chinese national holidays if you’re looking for a peaceful experience. The park hosts various cultural festivals throughout the year, including the Spring Festival, May Day, and National Holiday.
Beijing’s Chaoyang District
The Chaoyang District is the epitome of modern Beijing. A favorite among expats, the neighborhood is home to some of Beijing’s tallest skyscrapers, swankiest shopping centers, and hippest bars and restaurants. Sanlitun Lu, also known as Bar Street, ranks among the city’s best nightlife areas.
