Cheongwadae Sarangchae

45 Hyoja-ro 13-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Cheongwadae Sarangchae is a 2-story museum where visitors can learn about Korea’s political and cultural history. Originally the home of the public information hall of Cheongwadae, the facility reopened as a museum in 2010, with exhibit halls on past presidents and first ladies, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and Korean culture.

The Basics

While many travelers are aware of Cheongwadae, also known as the Blue House, fewer make it to this history center outlining the nation’s presidential past. To gain a better understanding of modern Seoul, visit this museum with a guide. It’s sometimes included on city tours, along with attractions such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Jogyesa Temple, Insadong, and Namdaemun Market. Tours with a focus on history might combine a visit to Cheongwadae Sarangchae with a tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Folk Museum inside.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Cheongwadae Sarangchae is a must-visit for history buffs or those interested in global politics.

  • Photography is allowed in the museum, but remember to turn off your flash.

  • Admission to the exhibition hall is free of charge.

How to Get There

To get to Cheongwadae Sarangchae by subway, take line 3 to Gyeongbokgung Station and leave through exit 4. Turn toward the Blue House and walk about half a mile (800 meters).

When to Get There

This museum is open from 9am to 6pm Tuesday to Sunday. The collection offers an excellent introduction to Korean culture, so consider visiting early in your trip.

Cheongwadae The Blue House

Cheongwadae, or the Blue House, as it’s often called, serves as the official residence for the president of South Korea. Named for the blue tiles on its roof (a symbol of wealth), the house is only open to visitors who submit an application several weeks in advance, though many sightseeing tours allow you to see the exterior.
